THE COMPANY

Sign School provides practical sign language instruction to all age groups. Our certified teachers use a variety of instructional media including visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic teaching methods. Our curriculum includes conversational skills, vocabulary building, deaf awareness, and ethics. You can join a scheduled group or take private lessons.

CLASSES

  • Private Lessons are available for one student or one immediate family unit. Please let us know how we can help you with your individual needs.
  • Signing Smart Infant Classes include thematic lessons teaching signs for babies and mothers to use during their typical day together including meal time, bath time, play time, and night time. Music, books, and toys are provided during class to encourage mother and child interaction.
  • Toddler Play Groups include thematic lessons teaching signs for toddlers to use in the early stages of their language development. Music, books, and toys are provided to encourage the use of both sign and speech during their daily routine. Seasonal and holiday themes are also included.
  • Preschool Play Groups include thematic lessons which emphasize vocabulary building and basic communication. Music, books, games, and toys are included in class to encourage interaction with peers and practical use of signs. Seasonal and holiday themes are also included.
  • After School Enrichment Classes are provided for grades K-5 and grouped by age. The classes provide basic sign language vocabulary, conversational skills, and deaf awareness. Music, books, stories, games, and visual aids are used to teach vocabulary through thematic lessons which include seasonal and holiday themes. There is no text for these classes, however some take home materials are provided for practice at home and are included in the cost of tuition.
  • Middle School/High School Classes are provided for students in grades 6-12 and grouped by age. The classes provide basic sign language vocabulary, conversational skills, and deaf awareness. Beginning interpreting skills are taught through the use of music, books, and other media and students are expected to apply rules from Interpreter’s Code of Ethics. There is a text required for this class.
  • Adult Classes provide basic sign language vocabulary, conversational skills, and beginning interpreting skills. Students will present songs and simple stories in sign language. Field trips are scheduled to apply communication skills in real life situations. There is a text required for this class.

Classes for Homeschoolers are available through One Day Academy. Students may sign up for classes through www.onedayacademy.com.
Interpreting Services are available through one of our instructors or we can help direct you to other local certified interpreters.

YOUR INSTRUCTORS

Michelle
Austin Area Instructor

Michelle Wilkinson began working as an interpreter for the deaf in 1990. She has interpreted in colleges, businesses, churches and taught sign language classes in elementary schools. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Special Education Endorsement from the University of North Texas. She is a Texas certified teacher and taught for five years in the public schools before the arrival of her first child. She is now the mother of three daughters, one of whom was diagnosed with Autism PDD at the age of two. Michelle has a special love and empathy for families with children who have special needs.
